A few key points: these are genuine active noise canceling earbuds, not merely noise isolating (although they are that, too). That means that they generate "anti-noise" that cancels out ambient noise. In general, noise canceling works best with steady, low frequency noise, like the roar of a jet engine. It won't eliminate it entirely, but it will cut it down enough that you can enjoy music without cranking your player up to a dangerous volume. For me, it makes a long air flight substantially les ... s stressful. It won't cancel high frequency sounds, so it won't help much with the crying baby in the next seat (although the in-ear noise-isolating design helps a bit), and it generates a low level of high frequency hiss (probably because the phase registration of the anti-noise can't be quite perfect). Overall, I found the elimination of noise to be about as good as some middle-of-the-line over-the-ear noise canceling headphones that I've owned. More >

As someone who flies internationally at least twice a year, I used my Sony reward points to get these to have more comfortable flights. Upon arrival I tested at home against my laptop's fan noise that I thought somewhat similar to jet engine's humming. It didn't work. Little disappointed, I took it with me on my last flight to Tokyo. I realized how wrong I was. These earbuds will do two things: 1) They fit in your ears like earplugs to eliminate sound in your surrounding. 2) Once turned on, it wi ... ll actively cancel the incoming low-frequency noise.Noise cancellation function takes couple second to kick in after it's turned on, and I can definitely tell the difference. It will get rid of the low-frequency engine humming during flight. If you are not listening anything during the flight, do not plug the 3.5mm jack in - noise cancellation works best if there is no additional white noise/picked up static coming from the sound system. I've tried different noise cancellation earphones/headphones, overall, the headset is generally much better on the noise cancellation but you have to take the size.As the other reviewers mentioned, most of the noise reduction of this set is from the isolation. The noise cancelling does make a difference, but definitely not as dramatic as over the ear headset. Anyway, considering a nice noise cancellation headphone is big and cost a lot more, I would still give it a 4 star rating considering it's ... overall noise reduction, sound quality, and the low price More >
